Excel, how do I love thee? I shall let you count the ways.
Microsoft Excel is incredibly rich and supremely flexible.
I've used Excel on client projects for budget calculations, project coordination, number crunching, accounting, employee information systems, order tracking, text string manipulation, all kinds of analysis, survey tallying, reporting, record keeping, scheduling, databases, conflict of interest checking, intelligent time sheets, cash flow calendars, inventories, and so much more.
I really enjoy working in this program's deep environment with its hundreds of functions that can be nested inside one another to glean all kinds of insights and answers, and its many fabulous tools for wrangling and manipulating data.
- Nesting IF statements lets you see which records meet complex criteria.
- Conditional Formatting color-codes the results so you can see them more easily.
- Combining Data Validation with VLOOKUP turns an ordinary collection of data into a nifty search utility.
- PivotTables and Slicers let you organize, filter, and manipulate your data to get fast answers, and they are the molecules of interactive dashboards.
Which ways do you want to tap the power of Microsoft Excel? I'm here to help you get the most from the data you have already collected, or set you up for success on a new project.
Training people to use Excel is one of my favorite jobs. I have honed some wonderful techniques for teaching this vast program. Some students have told me after classes that Excel just became their new favorite program, and others have suggested that I write a book to teach Excel, because the class was presented so clearly and logically.
I've also developed a wide variety of Excel automation solutions using VBA, including complex charting algorithms, multi-level filtering and interactive report generation on survey results, and repairing incorrect data dumps from medical software and using the results to populate new, enhanced systems. The possibilities are endless.
If you can describe what you need Excel to do, there is a high probability that we can make it happen.
What day of the week is that date in Cell A1?
The formula =TEXT(A1,"dddd") will tell you.
What's the most common value in Column L?
The formula =MODE.SNGL(L:L) will tell you, but to avoid a circular reference, don't enter that formula in Column L.

"I met Rob while I was with NERA Economic Consulting. After speaking with him about our data-intensive worksheets and what we do with them, we knew he could teach us Excel functions, techniques, and programming skills we did not already know and use. Rob wanted what he taught us to be immediately applicable and valuable, so we spoke with him about our experiences and expectations, and provided him with sample workbooks. Based on these, Rob prepared and presented four customized classes on intermediate-to-advanced Excel functionality covering topics ranging from text manipulation to data analysis, breathing new life into standard functions by nesting them, creating lists, using VBA for automation and customization, and more, with solid training that went from descriptions through in-class exercises. He was very clear at explaining and demonstrating how each function worked and was able to demonstrate on the spot based on our questions to make each example more relevant. Some of the 'tricks' I still use today - talk about making smart long term investments."
